Pupils and teachers past and present turned out in their numbers for the latest instalment of the Old Sandbachians’ Annual Lunch and AGM on Saturday.
Sandbach School itself played host to the event, which was the Association’s best-attended to date, with around 75 guests on site to celebrate and raise funds.
The AGM saw Mark Bowland formally appointed President of the Association, and was followed by a sit-down lunch, with catering provided by the team at Sandbach Refectory.
Guests travelled from as far afield as Dubai and the Cayman Islands to be present on the day, but it was former pupil Howard Barnes – who flew all the way from Australia – who left no doubt about who had made the longest trip.
Howard was delighted to be in attendance, saying: “This is my first time back at the school for an event like this, and it’s been fantastic to meet some new people who’ve had shared experiences.
“I attended the school from 1958 until 1963 and can still remember having to swim in a pool just over the way which had a thin layer of ice on it!
“I intend to live until I’m 150, so would love to come back to an event again if I can.”
Asked whether he had switched allegiances ahead of the fourth Ashes test up the road at Old Trafford, he joked: “My son is supporting Australia, and I’ve always supported anyone but Australia, so I’ll be hoping England win!”
